Aging Beyond Modernism (The Modernism Project) is a series of painted portraits documenting the women artists who emerged in the first half of the twentieth century. Cities like Paris, Berlin, New York, and others became hubs of creative innovation where women from different walks of life found space to independently forge paths that weren’t dictated by traditional roles of domesticity. Although the many isms of twentieth century modern art are primarily identified with men, women were an integral force of the modernist avant-garde and made important contributions. The latter chapters of their lives offer a more expansive understanding of the broad range of work they created, especially as so many remained active until the end. The project is a means of visual documentation and a way to both broaden the understanding of each artist, and the relevance of aging in their evolution as artists.
